Cosmetically unattractive or even a burden in everyday life: unwanted and excessive hair growth negatively affects the quality of life for both men and women. Laser systems can be used to solve this problem with long-lasting results.
The treatment works on all body areas such as the face, arms, armpits, legs, bikini line and back. Even patients with sensitive skin and darker skin types can be effectively treated. Below are some laser hair reduction facts provided to assist you in making your decision process easier.
WHAT IS LASER HAIR REDUCTION?
Laser hair removal is one of the most commonly done cosmetic procedures in New Zealand. It beams highly concentrated light into hair follicles. Pigment in the follicles absorb the light. That destroys the hair. Laser can drastically reduce hair growth for a long period of time.
WHAT DOES IT DO?
Laser systems get down to the proverbial root of the problem: The high energy pulses of light penetrate the upper layers of skin and unleash their effect at the hair’s root, the follicle.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
A laser beam passes through the skin to an individual hair follicle. The intense heat of the laser damages the hair follicle, which inhibits future hair growth. The target is the pigment melanin located in the hair follicle. The melanin absorbs the light energy, the follicle is heated and destroyed, the hair falls out shortly after.
Although laser hair removal effectively slows hair growth, it doesn’t guarantee permanent hair removal. It typically takes multiple laser hair removal treatments to provide an extended hair-free period. Periodic maintenance treatments might be needed as well.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
First your therapist will take you through a consultation and discuss to your concerns. Your therapist will recommend the number of treatments necessary to achieve the best results. Usually between 6 and 12 sessions, every 3-6 weeks will be required.
Your therapist will instruct you to get ready for the treatment before leaving the room to allow you to prepare yourself for the treatment. Your therapist will re-enter the room and begin the treatment on specified areas.
A cool gel will be applied to the treatment area and a hand piece glided over the skin. You will experience a warm pin prick sensation. You will hear continuous beeping sounds while the laser is operating.
A gentle air will begin to blow from the machine, this is purely for your comfort to reduce the heat. The hand piece will be placed on your skin and you will hear a beep as the laser passes over your skin. Your therapist will continue to move the hand piece over the treatment area. You will experience a warm pin prick sensation.
Your therapist will ask you for feedback on the temperature. This feedback allows the best selection of energy levels to be used and makes certain you remain comfortable throughout the procedure.
If you experience any redness or heat on the treatment area, Aloe Vera gel will be offered for you to apply. Your therapist will leave the room to allow you to get dressed. You may experience some heat in the areas treated over the next 24 hours which can be cooled with Aloe Vera or an ice pack.

SO, WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LASER & IPL?
The difference is in the use of different technology used for IPL, and Laser. Both are effective in reducing the growth of hair. However, Laser is a more advanced form of technology and far more effective.
IPL stands for ‘Intense Pulse Light’ – a spread out light spectrum that utilizes many colours.
Laser technology produces a single red wavelength of light and form, which has a very concentrated beam and specifically targets melanin in the hair follicle.
This involves the use of light energy that is absorbed in the dark pigment of the hair to cause damage to the hair follicle. The hair growth is then reduced without damaging the surrounding tissues.
Technology is amazing and evolves every day!
There are 3 types of Laser Hair removal machines.
- Laser– the most popular and effective way for Laser Hair reduction.
- IPL – Intense Pulse Light.
- VPL – Variable Pulse Light.
At Good Looking Beauty, we only use Diode Lasers as we have progressed from older technology (IPL) to Laser, for hair removal treatments.
Our Laser machines are top-of-the-range technology, and can treat all skin types, and hair colours from dark blonde to black hair. There are different settings used for each client according to their skin colour, hair colour and thickness.
There is a much confusion, and many misconceptions about permanent hair removal. Many people think IPL, VPL, and Laser are all the same thing, but simply put, they are not all Lasers. Laser is Laser.
Our machine settings can be adjusted and therefore the treatment is really comfortable and quite painless. Many salons and clinics buy cheaper versions of Laser machines, and have no formal Laser training, GLB has the highest medical-grade Laser machine to guarantee successful results faster, for more people, with less pain. “My Laser hair removal treatments worked really well. Needed about 10 treatments in total – had 7 over winter one year, and then just 3 remedial ones the next winter. Great results – very happy.”
“The staff here are so lovely and helpful! They explained the IPL fully to me, and I’m very happy with the results Definitely recommend GLB :)”
“I recently considered trying botox for deep wrinkles on my forehead and a very deep crease on the bridge of my nose, GLB had Trinity Gold facials on special at the time. After my first facial I saw immediate results and now have regular oxygen facials. The consultants are fantastic and alternate the products depending on how dehydrated my skin is at the time. I cannot emphasise how great the facials are, and as GLB know how much I love them they ensure I receive special deal emails.
Final outcome, I can barely feel or see any of the creases that were of concern and friends and family have also noticed the improvement.
PS – I have also had sensational results with IPL hair and vein treatments.
